Annie Sloan Makeover – Repurposed Entryway Bookshelf

How many times have you read a DIY blog that started off with something along the lines of, “This is by far my favorite project!?” Well, I’m just going to throw this out there … I am  absolutely OBSESSED with this Annie Sloan Makeover project! I think you will be too.

I was given this, what I guess you could call an, entryway cabinet from my mom. She was replacing it with something that matched her new, beautiful front door and knows how much I like to collect the things she no longer needs. I like free stuff.

Her mother had given her the cabinet when she and my dad moved into their first house together. How cool is it that my husband and I now have it in our first home?! So sweet.

There you have it – the lovely before pictures. So 1990’s. Now you can see why she wanted to replace it with something that’s a little more in style.

Per usual, when I went to pick it up, a million ideas of how I could revamp this thing start running through my head and I’m ready to take it home. After sitting in my garage for several weeks, I finally decided what I wanted to do with it and away my Sunday project went.

In order to get the black color I was going for, it took three coats of Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Graphite plus one-to-two layers of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Black Wax. The Black Wax is what really sealed the deal and gave it the perfect black tint.

As you can see, I removed all of the glass from the cabinet and transformed it into a bookshelf. You cannot see it in the “before” pictures, but there was also a glass shelf in the middle of the cabinet. This is where my idea of the rustic wood shelf stemmed from.

To make the shelf, all that was used were three 2x4s, wood stain, and some type of L brackets to hold the three pieces together. We placed the shelf on four support tabs that were already located in each corner. My husband had to help me wedge that baby in there, but at least we know it’s not going anywhere! In the end, it took me roughly 24 hours to complete.

• MinWax Wood Finish Stain in Dark Walnut

• 4 small L brackets found in lumber
